Program note: Au fond des flots repose une perle blanche is a miniature written for Thomas Piercy. This piece was written during the quarantine due to the Covid-19 pandemic. The inspiration comes from a series of photos taken by Thomas during the pandemic in Tokyo. A feeling of serenity emerges from these pictures. In this piece I strive to transcribe the positivity and hope in Thomas’ photos, captured through the lens of his personality and the urgence and gravity of the situation. This dichotomy is symbolized in the opposition of the interactions between the piano and clarinet throughout the piece.
