Derrière le rocher céleste

Instrumentation: clarinet with harmon mute (doubling half bass clarinet)

Duration: 7 minutes

Year composed: 2022

First performance: Danny Erdman, CEME Festival, Studio Annette, Tel-Aviv, Israel, January 7th 2023

Program note: Derrière le rocher céleste is part of a diptych for solo clarinet with the piece Izanagi. The two pieces share the main initial material. However in Derrière le rocher céleste, it is filtered through the use of a harmon mute and through the physical deconstruction of the clarinet. Thus, the initial material is deconstructed into a faint and distorted memory. This diptych is inspired by the shinto myth of Izanagi and Izanami where Izanami got sealed away by the use of a boulder in the Yomi by her husband Izanagi. Izanami wasn’t able to escape the Yomi anymore and was only able to scream through this impassable barrier.
