Program note: Shoki is inspired by a dream I had where I was in the middle of a field with beans all around, as far as the eye can see. I recall hearing a loud whooshing sound that stayed in my mind after I woke up. It reminded me of the story of the bean washer, Azuki Arai (小豆洗い). This supernatural creature from Japanese folklore lives in the mountain and spends his time washing beans while singing a song interspersed with the sound of beans being washed in a basket: shoki shoki.
