Program notes: Avant la lumière was written for saxophonist Pisol Manatchinapisit as a prelude to the piece La lutte pour la lumière previously premiered at the Pavillon Le Corbusier. La lutte pour la lumière is directly inspired by the work of Le Corbusier; the title is pulled from a famous quote from the architect. The piece is constructed as a duet between the electronics and the primal qualities of the saxophone’s sound. Avant la lumière explores some of the material developed in the previous piece and prefigures some of the characteristic gestures of La lutte pour la lumière.
